Albert Watson
Best Of - Part 1
Summary
Albert Watson, blind on one eye, has made a name for himself as one of the most successful fashion and advertising photographers in the world. Born and raised in Scotland, Watson studied at the Royal College of Art in London. Since the early seventies he lives and works in New York.
His photographs were used on more than 250 Vogue covers and numerous other publications such as Rolling Stone or Time Magazine.
Many of his pictures are classic portraits of celebrities such as Alfred Hitchcock, the Rolling Stones member Mick Jagger or actor Johnny Depp. But Albert Watson does not only shoot the rich and famous, he also documents his travels around the world, works on still lives and art projects.
We met Albert Watson in Dusseldorf at his exhibition at the NRW-Forum Kultur. In this film he tells us about his life and the versatility of his photography.

Inspiring...
could be a word to discribe what kind of image this film has left in my mind.
Albert Watson is that kind of photographer... i think... many of use wanted to be at the beginning. But the most of use found their strength and talent in different subjects of photography.
Some of use are able to shoot technically good pictures and others are like kids havin' their first experience in discovering the world.
I think Albert Watson never lost the love he has found taking his first pictures. Photography... in its diversity... I think, when you really love to take a look at the world through a lens in your own way you'll try to show the world what you see with your eyes, mind, and heart.
For me... he is a person who shows his love for photography and art in every picture. This strength in his pictures... sometimes more and sometimes less... makes photographers remember why they have started to take pictures for a living... or in general.
I think that is why many of his fans are photographers.
For me he is living a dream... I think the competiton in photography, fashion and design has become so commerical and hard... but Mr. Watson shows us that you can be on top but never have to lose the love for photography. It is your decision if you just want to make money or use the power of photography to inspire people and yourself.
use = us
So sorry... sometimes the finger slips to the e.
... a photographers photographer !
It's really true what Mr. Watson is saying in this interview, a lot of photographers have a deep respect and admiration for his work, I'm one of them !
Whenever his name comes up in conversations with colleagues there is usually a short silence and then an exclamation of some sort....
He's really a photographers photographer !
I really sympathize with his refusal to get boxed in and labeled ".........photographer" or "........photographer" which surely must have cost him something.
But in the end I cannot help to notice the sparkle in his eyes when he talked about "change" and how that excites him and moves him.
I guess, at the end of the day, he's happy with the position he's carved out for himself and wouldn't want to change that.
I also had to notice how aware how his own images he was using the terms Iconic and Heroic to describe the red thread through his imagery.
A lot of people I know don't seem to understand what their images are all about but Mr. Watson impressed me with his insight.
(For me) the next project on the horizon is always the most exciting and what You did last week is already old news, and I believe Mr. Watson feels the same way...
