In this film, we'll follow photographer Martin Krolop as he shows us different ways to effectively trigger your off-camera flash unit. Krolop has separated the topic into two separate parts: First, the possibility to trigger the flash with an optical signal; triggering the flash with another flash. The second part is related to the wireless systems, a signal that is sent via transmitter or via a cable.

Playing with light is the best way to make remarkable pictures. When the light is just not right, or when you want add something special to your photo, flashes or strobes can definitely help. Sometimes you have no other option than to get your flash unit out of it's hot shoe and make it perform like a studio style strobe.

Whether it's a Canon flash, a Nikon flash or another make altogether Krolop guides us with simple steps you can take to produce professional and interesting images. However, light isn't always what you want it to be in all situations, so sometimes you'll need modify artificial lighting to enhance a photo or to light up a low light situation. Inbuilt flashes are sufficient for quick simple shots, but you might want to think about better lighting scenarios to make your photo stand out from the rest. For example, using color gels to add a color mood, a fill flash to light a subject and retain the natural lighting, using diffusers to avoid harsh shadows, and using stronger flashes to overpower ambient light are just some of the advantages that off-camera lighting provides.

Getting your flash off the camera is just the first step into the exciting world of lighting and flash photography. Once the flash gets off your camera, there a lot of things to play with, including changing shadows, selective lighting, light sculpting, and so on.
