Joel Meyerowitz 2
Elements: Air/Water Part 1
Summary
In the first part of our interview, Joel Meyerowitz, discusses how photography has impacted him and how his perspective has changed over the years.
In the second part of our interview, Meyerowitz gives an account of his conceptual photography exhibition "The Elements: Air / Water Part 1".
While preparing an exhibition of photographs of swimming pools by the sea, Meyerowitz became inspired by the swimmers diving off the pool platforms. The idea was simple; he decided to make a video of the divers and to use this in his exhibit as a video installation. But he soon learned the implementation to be far more gratifying than he could imagine.
While filming and photographing in an underwater room, Meyerowitz captured striking images of two precious elements, water and air. His images show the relationship of these two elements as they envelope the diver, all briefly coexisting together, before separating. Not only did he have video for his installation, he had a new series of stunning images.
This new method of showing both still images and video in an exhibition was very appealing to Meyerowitz. He is currently planning consecutive exhibitions, showing the interactions between the four elements, namely Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.
