Summary
Born in 1953, Michael Kenna is one of the most renowned living landscape photographers. After finishing his studies at the Banbury School of Art and the London College of printing in 1976 with honors, he went to San Francisco. Ruth Bernhard has been a major Influence for him to use the negative in a creative way. Whilst darkroom work is an essential tool for him he is no fan of digital image editing.
His black and white photographs show unusual landscapes in the dusk or at night. Exposure times of several hours are no exception. But Kenna enjoys waiting, while the light paints pictures on his negatives.
We met Michael Kenna during his exhibition at the Camera Obscura gallery in Paris.
