Richard Misrach was born in 1949 in Los Angeles. He was among the pioneers of color and large format photography.

He ist best known because of his lifelong series "Desert Cantos" that deals with the West African desert and how it reflects the human condition. The series documents tourism, urban sprawl, industrialization, fires, floods or the testing of nuclear weapons. Misrach collaborates with a Mexican-American musician who interprets Misrach's photos with his instruments, that's the reason for the name Cantos.

In this FotoTV. Interview he also tells of his other projects and of what the philosopher Heidegger has to do with his current photo book "The Mysterious Opacity of Other Beings": Heidegger affected not only the name but also delivered the basic idea that people never really understand each other.
